We had the loveliest 18th century picnic today. It was a much smaller affair than our usual parties, but it was all the lovelier for it in some ways - intimate and cozy. We played croquet and made some new friends in the process, lounged about in the sun, then strolled home and are now enjoying tea and a screening of Vatel.

I’m also especially proud of myself for arranging Elle’s hair - my very first attempt at any sort of 18th century hairstyle that isn’t a wig. Any excuse to play with a redhead is a good one for me, and this turned out rather well. The fans are also ones I painted by hand.

Picnics are the only reason I get out of bed in the summer. We just scheduled our first Edwardian croquet picnic of the summer, and I can’t wait. These are pictures from the most successful picnic I have yet managed to host - last year’s Death in Venice ramble.

I miss this lady and her lovely husband so much it hurts, and makes me absolutely loathe this country for not letting me go.

I miss this too. Can’t believe it’s been only a year. Feels like an eternity!

Another gorgeous bunch of photos showed up from the Jazz Age Lawn Party! Going to try and bring an even fancier spread next time…

Our happy feet and their low-down beat wound up in the Times!

Getting your picture taken by Bill Cunningham is such an honor.

The Jazz Age Lawn Party happened yesterday. Most delightful, Charleston and croquet-filled drunk afternoon ever!
