Oh, I fell off the Ballets Russes wagon. To be fair, I am never really on the wagon when it comes to the Ballets Russes. But I do blame my Tumblr wife and Rites of Spring, because holy crap any historian who analyzes early 20th century culture through Diaghilev’s ballets can just take me whole.
The sinister way in which I drew Diaghilev suggest an antipathy I don’t at all feel for him. He has a handkerchief in front of his face because in the opening scene of Nijinsky, he returns from being away to Vaslav, who is still recovering from typhus and due to the infection Diaghilev kisses him through a handkerchief. Such a gorgeous scene.
